Rant against media and advertising
If "heavy metal" or whatever subcategory you feel like using appeals to people who are going through typically teenage emotions like angst toward the world of capitalist adults, then conversely rap / r&b is produced to appeal to people going through typically teenage emotions like lusting after every person that they see. Therein lies the problem: This current generation of adults was failed by the previous generation. They were not given proper rites of passage into adulthood. Instead of growing up and maturing as human beings, they've just greedily grabbed at any "commodity" that they can get their hands on no matter how many people must be stepped on to get that slice of the pie. [I originally posted this to Kyane's guestbook.]

Furthermore, not to leave out the category of "country music," I'll post my feeling on that genre here: Country music and its listeners are not innocent of perpetuating this same cycle of greed. With country stars teaming up with rock and rap stars to increase their sales across the board and lyrics addressing either the bitter pain of loneliness or the adrenline rush of promiscuous sex, they spread both sides of the problem equally.

To further ruffle people's feathers, let me express further dislike of most of the music industry and the media in general. Clear Channel Radio owns most of the radio stations operating in the United States. So it doesn't matter which type of music you listen to as long as you tune into the radio they'll keep making money. Continuing to buy music at full price from the stores puts more money in someone's pocket. Seeing a movie at the theater or buying it for your own personal use still spreads around millions of dollars. Pirating music and movies via the World Wide Web only costs you the price of your connection fees, unless you get caught. We all know that any threat to the megacorporations that own the media's pocketbooks must be dealt with harshly.

Riding on the coat tails of all this media commerce is the advertisers that make it all possible. They will take any opportunity to place their products into the areas they will receive the most exposure. Wonder why someone wears a certain brand of sunglasses or a drives a certain car? You shouldn't.

{Tonight's spoken word performance by Nny may have spared many a late night restaurant worker and their customers a ghastly night. Please applaud politely and send donations along with a self addressed stamped envelope to his house you slick internet surfers or send payments via PayPal to his email address. Thank you.}
